Mysuru: The Mysuru Zoo authorities on Tuesday confirmed that one spot billed pelican and three graylag geese have died due to avian influenza. As a precautionary measure, the authorities decided to close Mysuru Zoo from January 4 to February 2.
Mysuru zoo which has planned various programmes as part its centenary celebration from March this year, is closed for public due to avian influenza affect. In the history of Mysuru Zoo, this is for the first time, that it has been shut for a month due to avian flu. A decision to this effect was taken by the zoo authority on Tuesday after convening an emergency meeting. On December 28, a spot billed pelican and three graylag geese were found dead in ponds at Mysuru Zoo. On December 30, taking the deaths seriously, the zoo authority sent the carcass of these birds to IAH and VB, Bengaluru. The above said are migratory birds.
On Tuesday, the zoo authorities received a report from Commissioner of National Institute of High Security and Animal Diseases, Department of Animal Husbandry that Avian Influenza is confirmed in the free ranging and migratory birds that died in Mysuru Zoo. Soon later, a meeting was called and decision taken to close the zoo from January 4 to February 2. Strict biosecurity measures have been taken in Mysuru Zoo in the interest of public health and animals.
