Face recognition cameras to help crime detection

Mysuru: United Kingdom will introduce high resolution camera system “HALO Face Recognition” in all its police stations. The currently prevalent CCTV cameras are not clearly picking up images of suspects. Hence after going through those complaints, Hassan Ugail, a visual computing researcher at Bradford University in UK and his team in United Kingdom have come out with a system called as “HALO Face Recognition” which combines a high resolution camera system, which takes detailed images of a person from five different angles in one click.

Hassan Ugail, during his special lecture on the “The Rise of Artificial Intelligence and World War III-Man Vs Machine organised by the International Center in association with the University of Mysore’s (UoM) Department of Studies in Computer Science said, “The facial recognition cameras will be installed in all police stations across UK in few weeks. The cameras developed by image analysis company Acume Forensic will be installed across all police stations in UK which suites to take mugshots of people who have been arrested. These will be fed to the algorithm which uses an artificial neutral network similar to those used in artificial intelligence research firms. The algorithm systematically learns the unique features about the person’s face including their skin colour, texture, shape of their eyes, nose and mouth. Once our algorithm has learnt a face, it can recognise them even from just their ear.”

Thermal cameras to expose liars:

Liars could be caught by a new technique that monitors tiny changes in blood flow and expression. The lie detector test which is being developed by a team at the University of Bradford led by Hassan Ugail, uses cameras and computer software to recognise untruthful faces. “Thermal imaging camera measures flushing and blood flow patterns around the eyes while the system also picks up give away clues such as lip biting, slips of the of the tongue, nose wrinkling and blinking. Once this lie detector becomes a reality, it will be used by police for questioning the suspects”, added Ugail.

Dayanand Mane, Vice Chancellor (In-charge) UoM, G R Janardhana, Director, International Centre and T K Umesh, Dean, Faculty of Science and Technology were also present.
