Drought-hit Gujarat farmers find respite in handicrafts

Mysuru: Handicrafts has come as a blessing in disguise for the people of Gujarat especially those who are hit by natural calamities including cyclone, earthquake and severe drought for the past many years. After learning the art, most of the people including women who were in distress after severe drought, are now easily earning Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 per month.

Many people, especially women folk who were dependent on agriculture have taken up handicrafts as an alternate to agriculture and managed to make good money which is more than enough to lead a family. Speaking to Newskarnataka, S D Makwana, Manager Marketing, Industrial Extension Cottage, Gujarat as a part of Gujarat Handicraft Utsav 2017 which will be held at JSS Urban Haat, Hebbal Industrial area on Ring Road from June 29 to July 9 said, “Many agriculturists have taken up handicrafts for their survival. Places including Kutch are severely affected with drought since many years. The affected people after learning handicrafts are now not only self reliant but also leading a good life. Their products are even being exported. They have learnt embroidery, bead work, leather craft, pithora painting, wood carving and lacquer work, pottery, terracottas and mud mirror work, metal work, stuffed toys, mashru weaving, tangalia waving, tanchhoi, tie and dye, block painting, Kalamkari and Rogan.”

“Craft of Gujarat is an initiative started by the state government to promote handicraft products which are produced by the artisans. The products include decorative items, embroidery clothes, leather work, bandhani, hand-block printing and many more. More than 50 master and creative artisans of Gujarat state are participating in this exhibition and will exhibit, demonstrate and sell their rich art and crafts including Bandhani (Tie & Dye), Kutchhi Embroidery, Handloom Products, Bamboo Crafts, Jute Items, Coir Products, Agate Items, Navarathri special Chania Choli, Clay Articles, Patch Work, Bead Work, Terracotta, Warli Paintings, Eco-friendly jewellery items”, added R S Gajjar, Manager, Indext-C, Gujarat.

After overwhelming response for the Gujarat Handicrafts Utsav last year, Industrial Extension Cottage, Government of Gujarat in association with JSS Urban Haat has organised “Gujarat Handicrafts Utsav 2017” for the second time in Mysore. The utsav will be inaugurated by Member of Parliament Pratap Simha and MLA G T Devegowda, Joint Director of DIC Ramakrishne Gowda, B R Umakant, Joint Director (Projects), JSS Technical Education Division and Sashidhar, Assistant Director, Handicrafts Marketing & Service Centre, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, Mysuru are the chief guests. The expo will be open for public from 10 am to 9 pm.
