Mysuru: Here is good news for throw ball and softball players. The Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi for the first time has included throw ball event in its inter university sports competition. University of Mysore will send both its men and women’s throw ball teams for the All India Inter University Competition which will be held later in the year. Apart from this, for the first time UoM will also be sending its softball men’s team for the national level competition.

“Though we had outstanding men and women throw ball players who are not only doing well in the state and national competitions, they are regularly seen in Indian team. Though AlU has been conducting inter university competitions for various sporting events, it hadn’t taken up throw ball. Following demands from various quarters, AIU considered the request and from this academic year, it has introduced throw ball as one among its inter university events”, said P Krishnaiah, Director (In-charge), Department of Physical Education, UoM.

Speaking to Newskarnataka, Krishnaiah added, “The inclusion of throw ball in all India inter university competition will really boost the game further and it will also motivate the players to do much better. Those who win medals in the all India inter university competitions will also get job opportunities and if they want to pursue higher education it will also give them reservation for post graduation seats. In Karnataka, most of the talented throw ball players come from South Karnataka especially Mysuru, Hassan, Chamarajanagar and Mandya. There are many players both among men and women who went on not only to represent the state but also the country. Going by the available talent pool, we can come out with a good University of Mysore team and can expect medals in the all India competition.”

N S Subramanya, Physical Education Director, The Institute of Education, Onkarmal Somani College of Education, Kuvempunagar who was nominated as the Manager of Indian throw ball team for the third time by Throw Ball Federation of India said, “Really it’s a very good initiative on part of AIU. This will really boost the game further and help the players in a big way. We have a good team and I am very positive that University of Mysore will come up with good performance in the inaugural All India Inter University Throw ball Competition.”

From this year, UoM has also decided to send its men’s team for All India Inter University Softball Competition. Though for the past many years, all India softball competition is being conducted by AIU, UoM was not sending its team but now due to a lot of talented players the team will make its debut.
