Mysuru: “There are very few efforts made for the conservation of environment in the country” lamented Additional DCF Jagath Ram here on Wednesday.

He was speaking after planting saplings in a  programme held at Administrative Block of KSOU.

He said, “conservation efforts in India started in 1952 when KM Manshi occupied the position as Agricultural Minister. That was the first initiation by the government. Thereafter, sincere efforts have been done in this regard. But there is very little achieved. Conservation of environment simply implies the sustainable use as well as management of natural resources which include wildlife, water, air, and earth deposits”.

“Conservation efforts aim to maintain the present condition areas of the nature or Earth which are not yet touched by humans. This is because of the fact that mankind is encroaching onto the environment at such a rate that various  landscapes are being taken over for   human developmental activities. As a result the forest land has decreased considerably well that we have only about 10 to 20% of the forest land  left”, he added.

Horticulture Officer Javaraiah said that sincere efforts have been made to turn the KSOU campus into an environment friendly one. Around 5,000 to 6,000 saplings of the various varieties like Badami, Honge, Casia family, Neem, Bettadanelli, Karinelli have been planted in the campus.   “The campus will be declared as closed plantation area where an “Ayurveda Vana” will be made. All the medicinal plants will be made available here”, he added.

The VC, KSOU, MG Krishnan said that deforestation has become a major concern in the country. “To conserve the environment is a huge task. The attitude among the public must change and it takes time too. We are making a small effort in this regard”.
