Mysuru: While speaking at a two day national seminar on ‘Economic empowerment of tribals in India: Issues and challenges in Karnataka’ that began here on Monday,C G Hussain Khan, professor Emeritus, department of anthropology, Karnatak University (Dharwad) said that “Due to lack of database and qualitative information on tribals, they are not being taken care of”.

“Despite welfare programmes initiated by both central and state governments, many schemes have not reached tribals. Due to non-utilization of funds, some amount has gone back to the governments, while some has even lapsed. Child and women mortality and illiteracy continue to dog tribal families. There is a need for qualitative research to address the problems of tribals and to know their requirements. Only through holistic study their problems can be addressed”, he added.

He also said that for researchers, language has become a big hurdle, due to which wrong data is being entered. “Only through ethnographic research we can find the exact status of tribals. The government weighs all tribes on the same scale. But keeping in view the ground reality, the government should take up welfare programmes and ensure their welfare. It’s high time it gives up its one-size-fits-all approach,” Khan added.

T T Basavannagouda, director of KSTRI (Mysuru), said that various development programmes have been lined up in the days to come for the welfare of. “Around 45 elected tribals will visit Wayanad (Kerala) for skill-development training. Apart from this, math, English and science teachers will also be trained so they can teach the subjects to tribal students in a simpler way,” he said.

Earlier, the event was inaugurated by T Subramanyam Naidu, professor of anthropology department, Pondichery University.

At the event, experts will discuss various welfare programmes for tribal empowerment during the two-day seminar being organized by Karnataka State Tribal Research Institute at Central Institute of Indian Languages.
