Mysore: The Myra school of business, Mysore, organized a lecture by Dr. Unmil P. Karadkar, Asst. Professor, School of Information, University of Texas on   “Taming the Hydra: Combining Research, Development, Outreach, and Social Responsibility to maximize Impact in a Cultural Heritage Project” as a part of its special lecture series, “InSight” on July 28th 2014, at 4.30 PM at their campus auditorium.

Dr. Unmil Karadkar, a PhD in Computer science from Texas A &M University is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the School of Information, the University of Texas at Austin and is involved in research in at the intersection of human-centered computing, and collaborates with researchers from diverse areas such as the sciences, humanities, and nursing.

Dr. Karadkar’s lecture was on a complex project undertaken to  preserve historically significant records of the first mental health institution for African-Americans in the USA called the Central State Hospital Archives and Digital Libraries project. His lecture focused on the challenges and approach in planning, managing, and executing this ambitious project.

The records that form the project’s scope, span a hundred years since the Civil War (1868) to the Civil Rights movement (1968). These records consist of hospital administrative records, legislative records, as well as patient and treatment records, which detail the evolution of mental health practice over the last century. The digitized records take up about 14 Terabytes of hard disk space and present a tremendous technical challenge for providing access as these include handwritten records and poorly printed documents.

This project involves both a technical challenge, of preserving over 14TB of data and providing access to it to Interested stakeholders and the legal and ethical challenges of striking a balance between maintaining the privacy of the patients and their families against providing access to the various stakeholders and interested groups.

The Myra school of business, located at Mysore, is a reputed business school that  bases its existence and education on its core values of Integrity, Excellence, Efficiency and Engagement.  It’s vision is noble and necessary in this day and age –  It aims to groom transformational leaders and develop as a globally recognized mature academic institution, which it is well on the way to doing.

The lecture was well attend by the students and guests and was appreciated by the audience for the innovation in approach to what is a complex project as also the way the erudite Dr. Karadkar translated complex issues into simple language for the benefit of the audience.
