Mysore: Development of society and nation depends on women, said Dr. M A Saleem Commissioner of Police, Mysore in a seminar held at Rani Bahaddur Auditorium of Mysore University. The seminar was organised by Karnataka State Women’s Commission, Dr B R Ambedkar Research Centre, Mysore University and Yuva Pragathipara Chintakara Sangha.
Saleem further said several measures have been taken to prevent harassment of women and added CC Cameras have been installed in strategic locations, all-women police patrol vehicles launched. He said suggestion boxes are placed in public places to help people drop their complaints or suggestions mainly on harassment of women.
He also said that cab drivers and school and college bus drivers are given training on how to behave and interact with the students.
He further added that special short films on women harassment and ways and means to prevent harassment will be brought out by Mysore Police with the help of Infosys. He said the films will be screened during the Dasara in theatres in order to create awareness in society.
Manjula Manasa, President Karnataka State Women’s Commission.who presided over the function said a change in mindset is the only way to prevent harassment of women in society. Good education also matters a lot, she said.
These kind of seminars will not help unless our thinking does not change, she further said and added that men should treat every woman as their own family member and respect her.
Earlier, inaugurating the seminar, Prof. Rangappa, Vice Chancellor of Mysore University, said that women’s safety should get utmost importance in the society. Higher education to women will help them stand on equal footing with me, he said.
