Bannur: Curtains were drawn on the two-day long Mysore District Kannada Sahitya Sammelan on July 28, Monday.
Addressing the valedictory function, Pundalika Halambi, Kannada Sahitya Parishat President expressed his concern over the declining number of students in Kannada schools. He said this was due to the general notion that studying in English schools would open the flood gate of job opportunities. Such a misconception must first end, he added.
Appreciating the state government’s move towards promoting Kannada as an official language in state government offices, he urged for a legislation that would ensure better opportunities for Kannada students. There is also a need to encourage youngsters to develop interest in research on Kannada, he further observed.
Kannada cannot flourish unless and until we realise that it is Kannada which gives us our bowl of rice. He also recommended 50 per cent reservation in jobs for Kannadigas.
