Plans afoot to Chamarajanagar PG center as a ‘mini campus’ of the Mysore University

Mysuru: With new plans to upgrade the Chamarajanagar PG center as a ‘mini campus’ and the installation of three study chairs, The University of Mysore has projected a deficit of Rs. 31.65 crore in its Budget for the year 2015-16.

In the Academic Council meeting held here on Friday, Academic Council member Prof. Indumathi presented the annual budget. The budget estimates project a revenue of Rs. 186.38 crore against a projected expenditure of Rs. 218.04 crore.

The bulk of the expenditure comes under the pay and allowance head accounting for Rs. 117.80 crore being salary for the University staff and pension for retired employees.

But the expenditure for “teaching, research and extension activities” is projected at a mere Rs. 5.99 crore which amounts to three per cent of the total budget outlay. The projected expenditure for examination activities is Rs. 13.39 crore.

University of Mysore which is on the cusp of its centenary celebrations has sought the status of university of national importance from central government.

In the academic council meeting held at Crawford hall here on Friday, vice chancellor of UoM professor K S Rangappa said, “the urge to consider UoM as national status university is a decade long battle. Recently we met union HRD minister Smirti Irani in regard to it. Later I was directed to pass suitable amendments in the academic meeting and to hand over the proposal to state government. Later it should be sent to central government and it has to be approved in the assembly.”

Rangappa also said four MPs of Karnataka state have already assured to support such cause.  The National knowledge commission had already appreciated the works being carried out in university.

In order to set up the Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar study chair state government has allocated Rs  5 crore,  and to set up the Thippeswamy and U R Ananthmurthy study chairs,  Rs 1 crore each have been allocated.

The Chamarajanagar centre of the UoM which was suffering without basic amnesties has been considered in the present budget of UoM. This time Rs 9 crore have been allocated for the up gradation of the centre to a mini campus.

A statue of Kuvempu will be unveiled by the President of India and the Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar study chair will be inaugurated by Prime minister of India.
