Independence day and a near fatality for a young girl

Mysore: 11-year-old Ranjitha was discharged from hospital on Tuesday, five days after she suffered injuries following falling from a flagpole on the eve of Independence Day,. Doctors said her condition is normal.

It is learnt that on August 14, teachers Priscilla Rodriguez and E Komala asked her, a class VI student,  to join a rope on top of a 15-foot mast on Thursday. Four of her friends formed a pyramid to help her climb the pole. She lost balance after fixing the rope to the wheel. It is learnt that that both her teachers were present when she slipped and fell from the flagpole. Members of her Soliga community, however, say she doesn’t know what happened later and regained consciousness only at the hospital.

Though Ranjitha, who aspires to be doctor, wants to study, her parents are reluctant to send her back to school.

Anusuya, her mother, said: “I had lost all hope that my daughter would survive. But she was saved because of the doctors and authorities. It’s a rebirth for Ranjitha. I want to take her to our place in Soliga Colony, Jayapura hobli, and then decide on sending her back to school again. If my kid wants to continue studies, I will not send her to the school where the tragedy happened.

BEO, North, Susheelamma, who coordinated the billing process with the hospital, said the education department bore all her medical expenses – about Rs 75000 – and is ready to help Ranjitha to continue her education. If her parents want her to be relocated to a different school, the department will help them out.
