Mysuru: To create a sense of belonging and to empower the disabled children Central Food Technological Research Institute had organised a one day workshop on enabling the specially abled with CSIR-CFTRI Technologies.

Inaugurating the event, Director, Center for Human Genetics and Emeritus IISc, Benagaluru Prof Sharath Chandra said early detention, intervention and counselling is vital to overcome disability. But unfortunately, even with a considerable increase in Medical colleges we have not been able to meet clinical proficiency in the field of genetics.

Quoting statistics, the Director said that in 2014 UNICEF came up with a report which says 1 child in 20 under the age of 14 in the world, have moderate to severe disability, which means nearly, 93 million children in the world, which is almost equal to Karnataka’s population have a disability. Similarly the Karnataka government came up with a report which says only 9 lakh people in the state are specially abled. But this cannot be accepted as many of the families in rural area show lack of candidness.

Further he said that the last three decades have seen drastic changes in the society and also our lives. The nature of the disease has changed. The deaths due to infectious disease has come down while diseases which are not infectious have increased. This is due to imbalance in enzymes for which early detention is vital. In the coming days community involvement is crucial. Industries in the country are not willing to aid solutions to these problems. Government funded Science and Research Institutes must come forward and initiate these programmes.

The workshop focused on demonstrating technologies such as Papad preparation, Poushtik atta, Sambar powder making, to differently abled children to develop their skillset for creating sustainable enterprises in future and bring them into the mainstream of the society. Three children, one each from Mathru Mandali Shishu Vikas Kendra, Ashian and MDPAEDD participated at the workshop.

Director CSIR-CFTRI Prof Ram Rajshekara, Coordinator CSR- 800 Dr Renu Agarwal, and others were present.
