Sudden thundershowers disrupt Mumbai life

Mumbai: The cell was flooded with complaints of uprooted trees, disrupting traffic. Though the cell said waterlogging took place only in Hindmata, commuters took to Twitter to complain about waterlogging in Nariman Point, Kurla and Dadar. To add to commuters’ woes, Harbour line services were halted as the overhead wire between Cotton Green and Sewri stations snapped.

“Harbour line services were diverted between CST and Kurla on the main line,” said a CR spokesperson. While services on the Central Railway were delayed since morning as a train derailed in Dombivali, the sudden showers delayed trains even on the western line in the evening. The power supply on the Up slow line between Parel and Byculla was shut for an hour and evening services towards south Mumbai were diverted on the fast line, resulting in delays.

Though 41mm rainfall was recorded in Colaba and 17mm rainfall in Santacruz by the IMD at 8.30 pm, the disaster management cell recorded 31.63mm rain in the island city, 6.75mm in the eastern suburbs and 5.69 mm in the western suburbs.

Meanwhile, IMD officials attributed the phenomenon to the combination of high temperature and humidity in the city. “These thundershowers were localised and had a short duration. The high temperature and humidity resulted in these thundershowers. Monsoon withdrawal is yet to begin in the city. The withdrawal has begun in Punjab and other northern parts of the country,” said V K Rajeev, IMD Mumbai director.

On Tuesday, Santacruz recorded a maximum temperature of 36.5 degrees Celsius, five degrees above normal, while Colaba recorded a maximum temperature of 33.8 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature at Colaba was 27.4 degrees Celsius and at Santacruz, it was 26.4 degrees Celsius.

The relative humidity recorded in Santacruz was 91 per cent and in Colaba it was 100 per cent at 8.30 pm. IMD officials have predicted  cloudy skies and thundershowers in the next 48 hours.
