Mumbai suffers power cuts as Tata Power unit trips

Parts of Mumbai suffered power cuts since morning after a Tata Power 500 Mw power generation unit tripped earlier today. The tripping crippled power supply in Mumbai as the licensee’s two other units generating 750 Mw were not functioning following scheduled shutdown. While Tata Power has not issued any statement so far, sources told dna the situation would take hours before the normalcy was restored. “Overall, there is a gap of 1250 Mw in the assured supply to city and suburbs that consume roughly 3200 Mw.

Thus, the island city that is mainly catered by Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport undertaking, is reeling under power cuts,” sources told dna. BEST procurs its power from Tata Power as it doesn’t have its own generation units. While liance Tata Power’s installed capacity is 1877 Mw, BEST requires about 1000 Mw to supply its own consumers. Suburbs, too, suffered as Reliance Energy was forced to shut down its feeders.

“The incident has triggered in rotational power cuts by Tata Power in areas such as Chembur, lSantacruz East, Ghatkopar, Bandra, Kurla, Tilaknagar, Vikhroli, Sakinaka and Juhu,” a Reliance Energy spokesperson said. Reliance Energy has its own 500 Mw generation unit while they also have power purchase agreements with Tata Power and other producers.

The situation is expected to improve by 4 pm, sources told dna.
