Mumbai: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Raghuram Rajan is facing a threat to his life.

Earlier this month, Rajan received a mail in his official account, with the sender threatening to eliminate him. According to Mumbai police sources, the email was sent from the ID isis583847@gmail.com.

Though the full text in the mail is not known, dna learns this much: “I have been given money by somebody to eliminate you. If you will pay me more than I have been paid, then we can decide on it,” the mail said.

Since the ID starts with Iraq-based terrorist outfit Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the police are not taking it lightly.

Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria confirmed the development. “We have received a complaint that a threat email was sent to the RBI governor. The email also contained the name of ISIS. We are not taking this lightly and all efforts are being made to trace the culprits,” Maria told dna.

As soon as the email was received, RBI officials alerted the office of the joint commissioner of crime branch. The Cyber Crime Investigation Cell (CCIC) of the police immediately got on to the job.

The CCIC has sent requests to Google in the US to provide them details about the email ID.

“We have received the login and logout details of the mail ID and the probe reveals that they were accessed from outside India,” said a police source.

What has left the police baffled is that the mail ID was being accessed from 10 different countries, including Australia, Italy, US, Canada, Nigeria, Poland, Belgium, Germany, Hong Kong and Ukraine. The police suspect that a proxy Internet Protocol address was used to sent the email.

An officer privy to the investigation said the sender wanted to instigate the receiver and wanted him to reply to the email and pay some money.

“The email did not contain the amount the sender was demanding or any specific time-frame,” the officer said.
