Mumbai: Congress and NCP on Friday staked claim for his post in the legislative assembly a day after leader of Opposition Eknath Shinde quit. Both submitted documents before legislature principal secretary Anant Kalse as Shinde, who quit on Thursday, was inducted into the state cabinet on Friday.

State Congress president Manikrao Thakre said they had staked claim to the post as they had most seats. “We have 42 legislators in the lower house. We proposed Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil’s name. We submitted our proposal to the Speaker and legislature secretariat,” he said.

NCP, with 41 legislators, also staked claim to the post. NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said if the pre-poll alliance was taken into consideration, they had 45 members. “We had a pre-poll alliance with Bahujan Vikas Aghadi and an Independent from Amravati was elected following our support. Our claim must be considered,” Malik said.

If NCP’s contention is accepted, former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar will be the new leader of Opposition.

Thakre objected to NCP’s claim, stating that if it had supported the ruling party, it was wrong to stake claim to the leader of Opposition post. “Soon after the results, NCP declared unconditional support to the minority government. If a party supports the ruling party, it cannot claim the leader of Opposition post,” Thakre said. -Prafulla Marpakwar
