Mangaluru: Even though manual scavenging has been banned following few instances of manhole deaths, contractors continue to brush aside the rules and employ labourers to do the same.
In an incident reported from Mangaluru City Corporation limits, a contractor had employed labourers to clean up a manhole at Old Bunder Road.
The labourer, who is said to be hailing from Uttara Karnataka region was made to enter the manhole here though rules require contractors to make use of machines for the same.
The labourer was not even provided gloves and other gears which could have helped him prevent himself from contact the sewage.
