Udma girl re-embraces Hinduism after converting to Islam

Kasargod: A 23-year-old girl who had gone missing from her home reportedly to embrace Islam around four months ago has now confessed that she had done so due to pressure from peers.

Adira, had on June 10 left home saying she was going to a hospital. She had however left behind a 15-pg letter stating that she was going for a religious recitation and when she did not return home her parents had lodged a missing complaint. The police later traced her at the Kannur bus stop 17 days after her disappearance and she was produced before the court which gave her custody to her parents.

Addressing a press conference with her parents in Ernakulam on Thursday, Adira admitted that she had fallen prey to a conspiracy and had converted to Islam out of peer pressure. She however also stated that at that time she did want to gain more knowledge of Islam.

Adira, who has now reconverted to Hinduism, mentioned that now she has started gaining knowledge on her own religion and believes that this is an ideal religion.

Interestingly Adira’s statement assumes significance as several cases of forced conversions also known as love jihad have been alleged in Kerala. It may be recalled that the Kerala High court had annulled the marriage of a Hindu girl(name changed to Hadiya) with a Muslim man terming it love jihad

The Apex court had ordered an NIA probe into the case after her husband filed a petition against the High court order. However on September 16 Hadiya’s husband filed a plea requesting the top court to call off the NIA probe, alleging that the investigation agency “is not being fair”. The case comes up for hearing today.
