Mangaluru: The state-level Chess tournament, which is underway at the prestigious St. Aloysius primary school has attracted a record number of participants.
On October 11, which is the day 2 of the event, over 600 students were on the campus to make some right moves to beat their contenders in the mind game.
Fiona Memorial Hall witnessed an outstanding turn out of contestants at about 9 am. The two final rounds are scheduled to be held on October 12.
One of the participants, Madhura told Newskarnataka that she was super excited as this was her first state-level chess tournament. "Asha and Ashok are team managers from our school. Tyagaraj is my coach at Kadamba Chess academy. This institution has provided excellent facilities. Everything is systematic and well-planned. We are really happy to participate in this tournament," she said.
Parents who have brought their children all the way from Belagavi, Kolar, Chikkamagaluru, Davangere, Hassan, Mysuru and other districts were impressed by the systematic arrangement of the whole tournament.
Four arbiters-Manjunath M, international arbiter; Saleem Baig, FIDE arbiter, who is the only qualified PE in the education department, national arbiters Sakshath U K and Babu Poojary were guiding the participants throughout the day.
Manjunath, international arbiter, speaking to Newskarnataka, said, "More than 600 students from 31 districts have participated. There are around 900 people including parents and organisers to whom the institution has provided free food and I can say they have provided excellent facilities."
Arun Baptist, PET teacher of St. Aloysius School said, "We have received good feedback from the participants and the parents. Now the fifth round is underway. All PET teachers from Dakshina Kannada whom we requested to join us are present and are participating. We have organised cultural programmes today from 6 PM to 7.30 PM called 'Mangaluru Vaibhava'. We have a closing ceremony at 3.30 PM tomorrow."
The three-day "State Level Chess-Tournament 2017-18" for primary and high school boys and girls was inaugurated by District In-charge Minister B Ramanath Rai on October 10 at the St. Aloysius Higher Primary School premises in the presence of State Minister for Food and Civil supplies U T Khader, Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo, Fr. Dionysius Vaz, Rector of St. Aloysius Institutions. The event is being jointly organised by St. Aloysius Higher Primary School, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat and Department of Public Instructions' Office of the Block Education Officer, Mangaluru, North Range.
