St Agnes College bags ‘College of Excellence’ status from UGC

Mangaluru: St Agnes College has received ‘College of Excellence’ status from University Grants Commission(UGC) on February 8, making it the first college in Mangaluru, third in the state and 18th in India to achieve this feat.

Addressing a press meet at in the College, Principal Sr Dr Jeswina A.C, said, “The college, ever since its establishment in 1921 has proved to be a standard bearer of repute in the field of education. The college took the initiative of submitting itself to the accrediation process conducted by the NAAC,” she said adding that the college had the honour of being awarded a ‘Five Star’ grade in 1999, ‘A’ Grade in the following re-accrediation processes in 2005, in 2012 with CGPA 3.53. The college received ‘College with Potential for Excellence’ from UGC in the year 2006 and also recieved the Autonomous status from the Government of Karnataka from the Mangaluru University in the year 2007.

Dr Deviprabha Alva, HOD of Commerce, said, “The Rs 2 crore amount received from this grant will be utilised under four heads, that is Agnes Ignite Centre, Agnes Research Centre, Agnes Towards Community and Agnes Women’s Centre. The grant will be utilised to improve the quality of education in the college that is to buy lab equipment, teaching aids, laptops, software, maintanance and several recurring and non-recurring expenses.”

Vice-principal Sr Dr M Venessa, Dr Noeline J Pinto and others were present at the press meet.
