Mangaluru: State Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy who arrived in Mangaluru on September 20 to participate in a few programmes exuded full confidence in being able to crack the murder cases of journalist, activist Gauri Lankesh.

Speaking to media persons at a press meet held in the commissionerate office here, he said the SIT was probing the Gauri Lankesh murder case from all angles and he was confident that they would crack not only this case but also that of rationalist M M Kalaburgi’s murder. “SIT has collected clues but they want time to gather evidences”, he clarified. The home minister further said that the state government viewed both these murders seriously and wanted results.

In response to the allegation made by the BJP leaders that Congress government was tapping the phones of BJP leaders, Reddy said,” What is the need? We are 100 percent confident that Congress will come to power in the coming Assembly elections in the state. We have not carried out any phone tapping instead, we have the information that central government is spying on the leaders and ministers of Congress government in the state. In this regard, I have written a letter to the Centre. The union government has not responded favourably in this regard because it is an expert in misusing departments like ED, Income Tax Department and Reserve Bank officials.”

On investigation of Kavya Poojary’s death that took place in Alva’s institution, he said, “All the reports have been collected by the police department. Mangaluru City Police Commissioner T R Suresh will come to a conclusion soon.”

Later Kavya’s parents and advocate Dinakar Shetty met Home Minister demanding CID probe into the murder case.

On the delay by Dakshina Kannada Police in filing an FIR against Hindu Jagarana Vedhike leader Jagadish Karanth for provocative speech in Puttur, Reddy said that a case had been registered and police department would take necessary measures against this. No one is above the law, he asserted.

He also directed SP Sudhir Kumar Reddy to take preventive measures during such programmes.

Home minister also said that he had directed the police officers to curb the “goondaism” in the western range and Mangaluru City Police limits and if necessary extradite such people. Totally law and order should be maintained and crime rate should be reduced to zero, he added.

On increasing ganja mafia, he said police should take necessary action to curtail the drug menace and crack the sources who supply.

Regarding the case against MP Nalin Kumar for threatening police officer, he said the FIR had been filed and police would file the chargesheet.
