Kasargod: Acting on a tip-off, the Manjeshwar police managed to bust a drug racket being carried on in the city on Thursday August 17 and seized 22 kg arrested the prime drug of ganja
The prime accused identified as Abubakker Siddique (21), a resident of Hosabettu was nabbed during the raid at a room in Thuminadu here while two of his aides escaped the scene. A search is on for them.
Reportedly, the police had recovered only 250gms of ganja during the raid initially. However at the time of questioning, Abubakker confessed to having more ganja in his possession at the room itself. A thorough search was conducted and the police recovered the ganja hidden beneath some covers.
The ganja, it is learnt was being peddled into the city from Vishakapatnam in Andhra Pradesh where it was being procured for a price of Rs 5,000 per kg and was being sold for as much as Rs 50,000 per kg in places like Mangaluru, Kasargod and others through agents who would sell the same in small packets. In his confession he admitted to having peddled around 30kg of ganja into the city on August 12 with the aide of his two accomplices. The trio had already sold 8 kg of ganja in the time period before the raid.
Sources within the police have said that Abubakker. had pedled around two quintals of ganja over the last two days and in Karnataka itself he had smuggled around 60kg ganja in the last month.
Just last month on July 3 the Mangaluru crime branch police had arrested three persons who too were peddling in ganja from Andhra Pradesh and were operating from a city lodge at Falnir. Around 10 kg of ganja was seized in that operation.
