Kasaragod: The Kerala state government has imposed a temporary ban on digging new bore wells in the district with immediate effect. In its directive to the district administration, the government has indicated that the temporary ban will last till May end 2017.

borewell1The ban has come into affect due to the depleting ground water levels in various parts of the state and the prevailing drought-like situation. The government has asked the district administration to enforce the ban strictly.

The Deputy Commissioner has powers to deploy water tankers in areas facing acute drinking water supply.

Water tankers fitted with GPS system alone are allowed to supply water. The government has asked all its departments to keep a close watch on the movement of tankers in the state. They have been instructed to maintain separate log books and trip sheet data. Jurisdictional Tahsildars and Panchayath development officers have to oversee the operation of such tankers.

The state government has ordered to locate water sources to facilitate water supply to dry regions of the state.
