Mangaluru: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) chairman H L Dattu visited the district prison on August 24 and interacted with prisoners lodged in different cells and took stock of the situation.
He interacted with both male and female prisoners and later had a discussion with the jail superintendent and gave a few valuable suggestions.
Speaking to reporters, Deputy Commissioner KG Jagadish said, “NHRC chairman HL Dattu gave a few valuable suggestions to district prison committee and jail superintendent. We will try and implement his suggestions”.
Jail Superintendent Krishnamurthy who briefed the NHRC chairman said that the government has handed over land measuring 63 acres for a new prison near Belur/Kurnadu in Bantwal taluk and the PWD department has been requested to prepare the master plan for the proposed project.
Speaking on the occasion the city police commissioner said, in addition to the city armed reserve police, services of police personnel on duty at jail premises are being utilized.
NHRC chairman Justice Dattu was accompanied by Senior civil judge Mallanagowda, City corporation commissioner Mohammad Nazeer and Assistant Superintendent of Police ASP Vedamurthy during his visit.
