Minister lays foundation for new ‘Foot Over Bridge’ in Mangaluru

Mangaluru: Union Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu symbolically laid a foundation stone for doubling the line between Nethravathi and Mangaluru Central Railway Station and new a Foot Over Bridge (FOB) at Mangaluru Central Railway Station through video conference from New Delhi here on August 18.

At the same time, he also launched various projects like commencement of work on Hotgi-Kudgi-Gadag line doubling, Gadag-Wadi new line, dedication of doubling of Tinaighat-Londa-Shivathan section in Hospet-Tinaighat-Vasco, Electronic Interlocking Systems at Indi Road, Shivathan and Tinaighat, construction of new station building and extension of platform shelter at Chikkodi Road Station, extension of platform shelter at Rayabag Station, provision of platform shelter on PF no. 2 at Gadag station, construction of new PF 2 and 3 at Koppal Station, VIP Lounge at Shivamogga Town Station, 500 Kwp Solar Roof Top System at Mysuru Workshop, water conservation and recycling plant at Mysuru Station, improvement to Holenarsipura station at Adarsh Station, New DEMU service between Baiyappanahalli-Whitefield, foundation stone for bye-pass lines at Wadi and commissioning of Railway Bogie Karkhana at Yadgir.

Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel along with Mangaluru Mayor Kavitha Sanil and Palghat DRM Maresh Lalwahni symbolically participated in the inauguration.

Mayor Kavitha Sanil told reporters here that there was a long pending demand to upgrade the Mangaluru Central Railway Station to international standards from several years but unfortunately the work had not been started. “If the dream of upgrading the Mangaluru Railway Station to international standards materialises, Mangaluru will be identified globally. Also Mangaluru should made as a separate railway division”, she opined.

Nalin Kumar Kateel said that Narendra Modi’s government had increased the speed of work in railways and brought about transformation. “During the last three years, Dakshina Kannada has received Rs 1.500 Crore. Already Padil Railway Under Bridge is completed. The work of Mahakalipadu bridge will be completed if the state government provides Rs 22 Crore as per the Railways’ demand.

Regarding upgrading Mangaluru Railway Station to international standard, MP said that already private agency had done the survey. “About 60 acres of land is available in Railways but the corporation and state government should provide 40 acres of land. If the state government and corporation do the needful, within one year, the foundation stone will be laid to upgrade Mangaluru Central Railway Station,” he assured.

Zilla Panchayat President Meenakshi Shanthigodu was present.
