Mangaluru: With the entire nation standing divided over the ‘triple talaq’ abolition issue, Muslim Central Committee, which functions in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts has justified the Sharia laws and thus the Triple Talaq.

Stating that introducing uniform civil code can be detrimental to the social fabric of the country, Committee President K S Mohommad Masood said that the BJP government is unnecessarily interfering in the Sharia laws of the Muslims.

“There are necessary procedures mentioned in Sharia to ensure safety of women and give them justice when need be. The issue is not about triple talaq but they are hyping up the matter just to change the law. The committee strictly detests this move from the Government to amend Sharia law and we shall not tolerate it,” Masood said.

Yahya Naqvi the President of Udupi Wakf Board who is also an advocate spoke about the legal aspects of triple talaq. He said, “Talaq being said by the husband is known to everyone, but according to Sharia law, wives are given the right of ‘Khula’ which is equivalent to talaq. This provision is given to the women to assert themselves if there is a dispute within the family and the woman wants a divorce.”

K M Shareef from Jamaath-e-Islam explained the procedure of talaq and said that there are lot of misconceptions on triple talaq and that a relation cannot be broken merely by saying talaq thrice.

“In the first time that the husband says talaaq, there will be a counselling and discussion session for the couple to settle their disputes. When the second talaaq is uttered, the husband and wife do not stay in touch for a month and a meeting of both families will be put into order to settle the matter. But if there is still no change in the wife’s way of living a month after the second talaq, a third one can be given for a complete divorce,” he said.

When asked about why women are not coming forward to talk about triple talaq and Uniform Civil Code, Masood said that the women here have no problem about it yet and that is why they have not come forward to express their opinions.
