Bengaluru: Is Mangaluru all set to quench the thirst of Bengaluru? If a report submitted by the scientists of city based Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is implemented then people from Dakshina Kannada who are already upset with the state government over the Yettinahole project may be left in further distress.

On Wednesday, Bengaluru Development Minister K J George held a discussion with IISc scientists over feasibility report prepared by them regarding the supply of drinking water to Bengaluru city from west flowing rivers in Dakshina Kannada district. “The report suggests construction of a coastal reservoir at Mangalore to impound river flood water and make it available for drinking purposes after treatment. The novel technology was already in practice in countries such as China, Britain, and Germany. Various advantages of this technology, among others, included prevention of erosion, no damage to the environment, no displacement of people and no disturbance to the flow of rivers. Power could also be generated besides construction of by-pass roads. The water could also be used for irrigation purposes,” the scientists have said.

The pros and cons of the report would be studied in detail before taking any decision on the issue, it is learnt.

Urban development minister Roshan Baig, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board Chairman Tushar Girinath, environment secretary Ravikumar, senior official Anjum Parvez and others were present.
