Mangaluru: In an announcement, Quality Council of India (QCI) has declared Mangaluru the first open defecation-free (ODF) cities in the categories of below 5 lakh population. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will present the award at a function in New Delhi on September 30.
Mangaluru was recently declared the third cleanest city among 476 cities in the country. QCI had conducted a survey across 75 cities, including 53 with a population of more than one million and State capitals.
Mangaluru Mayor K Harinath said, “I am happy that the city has got the distinction in such a short time. The city has been identified as the first open defecation free city with a population of less than 5 lakh.”
Mysuru topped the list of million-plus populated cities.
