Mangaluru: A robbery attempt at Kumble Kanipura Shri Gopalakrishna temple stood foiled when the temple priest came to offer prayers in the wee hours of Thursday, May 18.
As per reports, the thieves had gained access into the temple sanctum sanctorum by breaking the door even as a security guard was deployed outside the temple premises.
It is learnt that the thieves had initially tried to break open the offering box but when they were unsuccessful they removed the silver sheaths covering the steps and had wrapped it up to make away with the loot. However, their plans went awry when the temple priest Madhava Adiga came to offer the morning prayers at around 3 am.
The thieves escaped into the national highway through the temple backyard, said the priest.
Police, fingerprint experts and several devotees rushed to temple on coming to know of the matter.
