Mangaluru: The Congress party’s programme to celebrate 76th anniversary of Quit India movement turned ugly when two factions of the party resorted to fighting out in the open, at the Town Hall in Mangalore, on Thursday, August 9.
It is said that Congress Youth Wing President Mithun Rai attacked Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) Mangalore South President Punith Shetty. The latter, who has been admitted to a private hospital told newskarnataka.com that Rai pulled out a pistol, placed it on his chest and threatened to kill him. “Later at least 12 of his supporters attacked me, ” said Shetty adding that Rai is jealous of him and hence may have resorted to this unruly manner.
“I have been receiving threats but the police did not provide me with security, ” he said adding that he will be registering a case against the Youth Wing leader.
When Newskarnataka contacted Mithun Rai for clarifications, he explained that the incident occurred when he was on stage and he was not aware of it. “I was not involved in the incident. He (Punith) is falsely accusing me and maligning my reputation. There are many witnesses to corroborate my story,” he added.
