Mangaluru: A young Hindu Jagran Vedike activist was hacked to death during wee hours of Sunday at Maroli in Magaluru by some members of the same outfit. However, it is said that the youth fell victim to the attack as the attackers missed their target.
The deceased is Prathap Poojary, 25.
It is said that Prathap was plying along with his friend Manikanta near Nidle at Maroli at about 1 am when 10 armed assailants attacked the duo. While Prathap died on the spot, Manikanta escaped miraculously with injuries. However, it is said that Manikanta was the target as the attackers may have wanted to settle scores with him.
It is reported that Manikanta, like a Good Samaritan had informed the police the names of a rogue gang members of HJV who had stolen money from some Yakshagana troupe in Kateel and the raged HJV group wanted to take revenge.
Manikanta, a mason was confronted by some HJV members at his work site about the theft episode on Saturday and the very following day the attack was executed.
Unfortunately, Prathap, who was employed in Mysuru had come to his hometown on holiday, but he fell victim to the assailants.
Six persons have been reportedly arrested in this regard.
