Mangaluru: The district administration is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the city gets drinking water, despite the depleting water level in Thumbay Vented Dam.

After proposing to take control of all private wells and bores in the region so that drinking water can be supplied on priority, Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim has clearly stated that no more bore wells can be dug in the region till May 31.

The bores can be dug only to procure drinking water and not for any other purpose.

The district administration has identified as many as 174 bores and 90 open wells in the city. Out of the open wells, 22 government wells and 14 private well water has been tested fit for drinking. The samples of the remaining well will be sent for testing and based on the report, the water will be used to distribute in the city.

Meanwhile, the DC has also said that de-silting work will be undertaken on priority basis at the Thumbay vented dam, where the water level has dipped to precarious 5.6 ft.

Mangaluru City Corporation commissioner Dr Gopalkrishna said that there are possibilities of 3 ft silt having filled in the dam, which needs to be lifted at the earliest.

Further, the Municipal Commissioner said that despite Disha Power Project releasing water from its dam, the water could only reach till Uppinangady. The exercise has not benefited Thumbay dam in any way, but however, the water released from MRPL and AMR project has brought in three inch water in Thumbay dam.

Hef urther said that the MCC has purchased 30 water tanker (syntex) to supply water to elevated areas in the MCC limits.
Meanwhile, the DC extended the restriction on water supply to industries till May 14 and extended the same for agriculture purposes for another five days.
