Mangaluru: Taking a dig at the Mangaluru City Corporation for its move to ration water, the Communist Party of India CPI(M) along with Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) staged a stir out the Corporation office in Mangaluru, on Thursday April 13, keeping forth a demand to supply adequate drinking water to the people of the city.
Addressing the protesters, DYFI state president Muneer Katipalla said that though the water level at the Thumbe vented dam stands at 4.76 mts and adequate water is also found in Nekkiladi dam, the MCC has unnecessarily resorted to rationing water, pushing the residents of the city into unexplained inconvenience.
Sensing some sort of ulterior motives behind thh rationing, Muneer alleged that there may have been efforts to help the tanker mafia by bringing in water rationing.
“If there is a crisis, the Mayor should have had convened a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner and the Municipal Commissioner. Without having done what was required to be done, the Mayor has unilaterally called for rationing of water, making way for suspicion,” he said.
Meanwhile, endorsing views of Muneer Katipalla, CPI(M) leader Sunil Kumar Bajal said that the organisations will continue to stage stir against the unscientific move of the MCC till adequate water is pumped to the city to meet drinking water demands of the people.
He question the purpose of building the new vented dam pouring in crores of rupees and sacrificing hectares of fertile land, if taps were to run dry by end of February itself.
