Mangaluru: In the by-polls held in the two wards of Ullal Muncipality, Congress registered a thumping victory by defeating rival BJP candidates with a huge margin. The by-polls were held on February 12. Congress Candidate from Chembugudde ward Basil D’Souza defeated his rival BJP canndidate Satish Chembugudde with 600 votes. BJP managed to get only 149 votes, whereas CPM candidate secured 78 votes and independent candidate Kalandar 57 votes.

Another Congress candidate from Kallapu ward Usman Kallapu bagged 510 votes and defeated BJP candidate Chandrahas Pandithouse who got only 226 votes. JD (S) candidate Ismail Shaffi received 29 votes and independent candidate Dinakar Ullal surprised everyone with 240 votes.

Meanwhile, Congress supporters took out a victory rally in the town.

In the elections held in Ullal in 2013, Congress had secured 17 seats, BJP 7 seats followed by 2 seats by independents and 1 by SDPI. But the two elected councillors Basil and Usman were disqualified after the two defeated candidates in the respected wards Anil Das and Dinakar Ullal sought their disqualification. The defeated duo had alleged that both the winning candidates had not submitted affidavits on criminal cases filed against them, while filing nomination papers. In 2015, the court upheld the objections raised and Basil and Usman were disqualified and ordered fresh elections in both the wards.
