Ujire: Twenty students from SDM Engineering and Technology in Ujire who created the world’s largest Rubik’s cube mosaic where images of comic actors Charlie Chaplin on one side and Mr. Bean on the other appear simultaneously, have entered the Guinness book of world records. The students have received the Record Holder certificate from the Guinness book of world records.

Delighted by the student’s performance, Dharmadhikari Dr. Veerendra Heggade praised their collective efforts and wished even the other students to draw inspiration from the achievers.

In their marathon effort which began at 7.30 am at the Indraprastha stadium in Ujire campus on October 2, twenty engineering students led by Prithvish, resident of Pethri Cherkady in Udupi studying in Final year. They used 15 cubes in 300 sets and arranged them in 75 rows by 2 PM to create images of Charlie Chaplin in green on one side and Mr.Bean in Red on the other.

This is the first instance in the world where such large number of cubes is used to create images. Twenty students worked for several months to reach their goal and spent lakhs of Rupees where patience, technical expertise and graphic designing played a vital role. The entire event was reordered using four Video cameras and the same was delivered to Guinness record team for rating their achievement.

Though one sided cubic outline image creation has been done by people abroad but the team feels this is the first occasion where perfect images on both sides have been created using Rubik’s cubes. The changes will be made in each cube on the spot to get desired output after assessing the problems that occur and experts in the field Vivek Prasad Mada, Engineer Shivaprasad Ajila, Lecturer Ganapathi Sharma Kulakarma witnessed the feat live. The team was guided by the principal of SDM engineering college Dr. K Suresh. The entire project cost exceeding 5 lakhs is borne by SDM group institutions.

Team work and guidance

Prithvish assisted by other students Prajwal Patil from Muddebail, Sharath Krishna form Mudigere, S B Veeresh and Mallanagowda Meti from Vijayapura, Shanthanath from Athani, Shivakaumar of Miyarpadav, Vinay from Bellary, Swapnil from Sangli, Prahlad from Mavinakere, Harikrishan form Yethadaka, Sathwik from Mundaje, Stephan from Balmuri, Madhur from Gundmi, Karthik from Banshanakari, Sanjay Holla from Ujire, Rohan from Nippani, Shahil N from Karwar, Sujay from Shivamogga, Shiva from Sabarakatte. Hundreds of students from other colleges witnessed the record effort live along with the public.

SDM group institutions have two Guinness records to their credit, first one being the 178 feet long cactus plant in Dharwad college campus and the other one being Yoga performance at different locations by 64,000 students in 2015 at the same time.

The leader of the team Pritvish, a fourth year electronics and communication student is the son of Agriculturist Shyam Prasad. What began as a hobby for Pritvish has turned into record making feat in 2 years time during which he has trained around 750 students. By imparting skills to 500 people, he has also won Unique and Assist words record titles. Pritvish has written a book on ‘Rubik Magic’ and 1000 copies have already been sold till date.

Jos Chalham of USA holds the record for one side outline creation where the screen size should not be less than 13.4 square meters. Along with studies the student’s have been practicing for 2 hours daily to achieve their goal.

Pritvish can solve problems related to cube in 38 seconds where as it takes a minimum of a minute now as he is ignoring his speed factor to devote time to train others in the field.
