Mangaluru: Mohammed Shahnawaz, the perpetrator of the heinous act of assaulting Milagres College Principal has been arrested at last after a series of protests and agitation in the city, on Monday, October 24.

A resident of Attavar, Shahnawaz was arrested at 5 PM at Pumpwell Circle area in the city.

It may be recalled that Shahnawaz, a student of Milagres College had assaulted Principal Fr Michael Santhumayor couple of days ago as the Principal denied hall ticket to the students owing to shortage of attendance.

The incident had sparked sharp criticism from various quarters and with the student going missing, the pressure was mounting on the police to act. Several organisations had held protests condemning the act of the students who is said to have been a cause of nuisance in the college in several instances in the past.

ICYM Former President wants laws in favour of college staff

Former President of Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) and the person who organized the protest outside the DC office on Monday, Sheldon Crasta spoke to News Karnataka and said that he is indeed very happy about the arrest of the person who assaulted Sheldon’s teacher and mentor. “Fr. Michael Santhmayor is a kind hearted and goal oriented principal. He does everything not for his sake, but for the betterment of college and students. The ex-students of Santhmayor are indeed very happy about the arrest as well”, he said with great joy.

“The DC and Commissioner of Police have given us great support and so did the members of organizations who stood united in our protest against Shahnawaz. Overall, after a hard day of protesting and putting pressure on the police, the news of the assaulter’s arrest ended the day”, he added.

“This should be a lesson to all the rogue students who should think more than twice to make any action on the lecturers and principals of any college. When I went to seek permission for the afternoon protest, the personnel from Pandeshwar police station were very supportive in our movement. They mentioned that Shahnawaz was a hooligan for committing such a crime against his guru”, he said.

As an initiative to moot the safety of lecturers against probable future attacks on them, Sheldon Crasta will pressurize the government in making special laws to support and help the lecturers if they undergo any injustice or assaults in colleges and schools.
