Yenepoya kids win ‘Verbattle’ contest, make mangaloreans proud

Mangalore : Verbattle is an intellectual event and a Debate competition which was established in 2005. Verbattle is the largest, exciting and unique debate platform for the students which facilitates thought and opinion exchange. The contest is conducted both nationally and internationally by Verbattle Foundation, a registered non-profit organisation. The Verbattle Beginner contest is being organised for the fourth year this July.

Two boys from Yenepoya school made us proud by winning the Verbattle Beginner 2014 competition. Dhruv Kiran Shah (11), son of Mr Kiran Shah and  Mrs. Archana Shah with his partner Arnav Alva (11),son of Dr Hansraj Alva and Mrs Neetha Alva studying in 6th std at The Yenepoya School (CBSC) at Jeppinamogaru Mangalore won the state level competition which was held in Bangalore from July 21 to July 23rd after competing with students from all over Karnataka.

Speaking to News Karnataka Dhruv said that the competition was quite a hard one. There were 27 teams in total. There were four rounds – skirmish,combat,confrontation, and face off. After the Combat round 9 teams were selected. 3 teams remained in the fray after the confrontation round. These three teams competed for the title.

He also said that his father is a great inspiration to him and he wants to become Architect in future. He also said that their teachers were a great support to prepare for this contest.He specially thanked Miss Poornima V J and Mercy Rego who had accompanied them in the contest.

Kiran Shah, Dhruv’s father speaking to News Karnataka said that in this competition students need to be quick. There were 12 students from Yenepoya School accompanied by two teachers. In the initial round students got at least 45 minutes time to prepare for the given topic. But for the last round they did not even get 5 minutes to think. So the students had to be think on their feet to debate on the given topic.

He also said that we need to encourage this competition as it helps children to think. The achievement should also inspire other students in Mangalore. The teachers from Yenepoya school encouraged the students and helped them in preparing for this contest.

The winning team got a Rs: 30,000 cash prize.
