Mangalore: Umesh Kumar, who was suspended as Sub-Inspector of Police of Kavoor Police Station for allegedly assaulting Charan, a Bajarang Dal activist, is likely to take over the post of Sub-Inspector in Mangalore traffic (West).
Sources in the police confirmed that Umesh Kumar will be posted as sub-inspector at Mangalore traffic (West). But, when asked Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) N. Vishnuvardhan, he dismissed any such decision. There are also reports stating that Umesh Kumar may get the post of Sub-inspector in Surathkal police station, which is favoured by local MLA Mohiuddeen Bawa.
It can be recalled that Police Commissioner R. Hithendra had passed the order of suspension, following a report submitted by DCP, confirming Charan was assaulted by Umesh Kumar on the hips. Earlier, there were a series of protests by Bajrang Dal activists seeking action against Umesh Kumar. They also staged a protest in front of the Kavoor Police Station for two days.
Expressing discontentment, district-in charge minister B. Ramanath Rai and congress leaders showed dissatisfaction over the transfer of Umesh Kumar, bowing to the pressures of pro-Hindu activists. Earlier, Rai had said, anyone who hindered the police officials from doing their duty impartially by picketing police stations and protesting should be arrested, without paying heed to pressure. People who provoked communal riots and disharmony should be brought to book immediately.
