Mangaluru: Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala on Friday stressed the need to strengthen Hindi in order to keep the country and its citizens united.

“While Hindi unites the country, regional languages strengthen respective regions”, he said, speaking at the inauguration of southern and south-western regional official language convention, which was organized by the Home Affairs Ministry here in the city.

Mr. Vala congratulated the efforts of Union government to popularize Hindi across India. He mentioned that there are very good literary works in the South India, particularly written in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam. If these vernacular works are translated into Hindi, many citizens from across India can make use of it, he noted.

“A nation should have one flag, one emblem, one anthem and one language. 75 percent of India’s citizens know or understand Hindi and fits as the national language. Popularizing Hindi did not mean the government is against regional languages. But, strengthening Hindi will bring India together”, the Governor said.

On a lighter note, Mr. Vala asked the audience to watch Hindi movies, serials to learn Hindi quickly. To which, the crowd burst into a laughter. Meanwhile, he mentioned that Hindi should be used everywhere, especially in the government circulars, gazettes, so that the national language becomes a integral part of our lives.

Earlier, several Central government departments, organizations and employees were felicitated for their efforts to spread Hindi.
