Mangalore: With justice being delayed, Praja Prabhutva Vedike of Belthangady, who took the lead in demanding justice for the rape-and-murder case of second year PUC student of a PU College Sowjanya at Ujire has decided to seek divine intervention.

The Vedike will hold ‘navachandiyaga’ at Belthangady on October 10. The day will mark the second year, from the day which the body of the student was found, said Mahesh Shetty Thimarody, founder of Vedike on Tuesday September 30.

Billed as Karnataka’s Jessica Lal, the case of 17-year-old pre-university student Sowjanya has had two years of long trial, marked by dramatic protests, despite being investigated by the local police as well as the Karnataka CID – justice still lingers.

The case is now headed for a third time re-inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation, after the Siddaramaiah government ordered it following massive protests in the region by Left-backed groups.

Addressing the reporters at press club, Thimarody said we have decided to repose faith in the almighty through this ‘yaga’ with the ostensible idea of not only praying for welfare of society, but also to give ‘sanity’ to those who perpetrated the crime to own up for it.

Accordingly, 11 women priests will perform the duties of head priests for each of the 11 ‘yaga kunda’ that will be set up for the ‘navachandiyaga’ that will be held at Belthangady taluk stadium on October 10.

The event, which he claimed is happening for the first time in South India, will see 1,008 married women take part and around 500 women have already committed their participation.

Rashtriya Hindu Jagaran Vedike, and Navachandi Yaga Samiti, Belthangady will join us, he added.

Besides, the volunteers from six zilla panchayat constituencies in Belthangady taluk will take out bike rallies to all the areas in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district from October 2 spreading the message of the yaga, Mahesh Shetty said.

Seers of eleven prominent religious maths from two districts will take part in the ceremony, he added.
