Mangaluru: Members of Communist Party of India (Marxist) and representatives of various organizations including Christian leaders on Thursday carried out a demonstration condemning the comment made by Rastriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat’s remarks on Mother Teresa.
Addressing the protestors, CPI(M) leader K. Yadav Shetty said that the RSS has been for several years accusing Mother Teresa, who has served the needy and allowed them to practice their own beliefs. Instead of making such criticism, the RSS should instead work towards the elimination of untouchability and superstitious practices.
Roy Castelino, chairman of Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy said if Christian missionaries have indeed indulged in conversion then the number of Christians in the country would have risen to 50 per cent.
Presently, Christians were very few in number. “It was because of the English education provided by missionary schools that many students have made a mark in the emerging fields. Mother Teresa has served people selflessly”, he added.
Muneer Katipalla, Democratic Youth Federation of India’s state president said that Mother Teresa served the needy by treating them as her own. Before criticizing her, RSS should introspect as to how many of them cleaned the stool and urine of needy and ill patients like Mother Teresa.
