Mangalore: ‘Nirbhaya Centre’ is set to come up in every district in the state exclusively for women affected by violence, said Dr. Amita Prasad, principal secretary, women and child development department, Bangalore.

inside dc nirbhayaShe was speaking to the reporters at the sidelines of a workshop on ‘Sexual Harassment of women at work place’ (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal), organized by Administrative Training Institute, Mysore in collaboration with Karnataka State Commission for women, Bangalore, at Zilla Panchayath on September 9.

She said that the centre will provide medical, legal and psychological support services for women under one roof. It emerges from the recognition of the fact that women survivors of violence face tremendous physical, emotional and psychological trauma which often re-victimizes them or make it difficult for the women to continue legal processes. The major concern in the provision of services for violence is to ensure that women are not further victimized but are treated sensitively, she said.

Accordingly, the Nirbhaya Centre will provide support and assistance to all women affected by violence, both in private and public spaces, and will be integrated with a women helpline in all the districts. It includes medical assistance, police, counseling, legal and shelter.

She also said that the centre will be be open 24 hours with referral services such as lists of hospital, police station, lawyers and counselors will be available at the centre. In addition, women will also benefit significantly from peer support as well as support from stakeholders embedded within the local community, including NGOs, CBOs, and community and religious leaders.

Earlier during the programme, Deputy commissioner A.B Ibrahim said that women outnumber men ratio in our district. According to the 2011 census, there are 1022 women for every 1000 men, he said. In five years, as many as 1,113 cases of atrocities against women were registred. Among them, 710 were solved while 403 are pending, he said.
