Mangalore: Muslims of Mangalore and Udupi, many of them, attired  in traditional kurtha pyjamas celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr on Tuesday with devout fervor, praying for peace in Palestine, Iraq, Syria, India and elsewhere in the world.

Children in their new festive attire added color and joy to the celebrations and the mobiles were out in large nos, capturing vivid moments for posterity. There was no rain and this facilitated mingling after prayers.

Imams who led the Eid namaz in various Eid-gah’s and masjid’s across the twin districts sought  Allah’s help, guidance and forgiveness.

Mangalore Khazi Twaqa Ahmed Musliyar led the Eid prayers and delivered the sermon. In his customary sermon, the Khazi exhorted the Muslims to follow the taqwa (God-consciousness) in their lives. “We have fasted for 30 days to comply with the command of Almighty Allah. Let us also lead a pious life in the remaining 11 months of the year,” he said.

Eid prayers were held at all the masjids of the city including Light House Hill, Masjidunnoor, Bolar Masjid, Kankanady Masjid, Ibrahim Khaleel Masjid and Taqwa Masjid in Pumpwell.

Eid al-Fitr falls on the first day of Shawwal, the month which follows Ramadan in the Islamic calendar. It is a time to give in charity to those in need, and celebrate with family and friends the completion of a month of blessings and joy.

Before the day of Eid, during the last few days of Ramadan, each Muslim family gives a determined amount as a donation to the poor. This donation is of actual food — rice, barley, dates, rice, etc. — to ensure that the needy can have a holiday meal and participate in the celebration.

On the day of Eid, Muslims gather early in the morning in outdoor locations or mosques to perform the Eid prayer. This consists of a sermon followed by a short congregational prayer.

After the Eid prayer, Muslims usually scatter to visit various family and friends, give gifts (especially to children), and make phone calls to distant relatives to give well-wishes for the holiday. These activities traditionally continue for three days. In most Muslim countries, the entire 3-day period is an official government/school holiday.

Moulana Abdurrashid Nadvi, Umari Khateeb and Imam of Jamiya Masjid Udupi, in his Eid message on the eve of the festival, said, “Eid-Ul-Fitr is a festival of Muslims which lays impetus on celebrating, sharing of happiness, spreading the message of peace and harmony, and be supportive during good and bad times of everyone. This festival lays stress on maintaining a balance in one’s life, spreads the message peace, and meets the necessity of human society. It also advocates world peace.”

He added further, that the Prophet has ordained that the entire human race is like a family, and those who are altruist, and follow the ideals of love, harmony and empathy, can be treated as excellent human beings. He added that Islam lays importance of installing peace, prosperity and justice in every field. He  has wished that the Almighty will bless everyone with peace, and spread love, affection, harmony and peace between all human beings.

In his Eid message, Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Minister, U T Khader, dwelt upon the need to lead a peaceful and harmonious life. “India is a land of many religions. We have the freedom to follow our religion. At the same time our behaviour and actions should not give a bad impression about our faith,” he said.

Eid-ul-Fitr was also devoured in the Ullal and other regions of the district.
