Puttur: Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Ananth Kumar has said that the Union Government is keen to set up a Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemicals Investment Region (PCRIM) in Mangaluru.
Addressing the gathering after inaugurating Krishi Yantra Mela (farm machine fair), the Minister said the government has proposed to set up PCPIRs in four citizen in the country with an investment of Rs 10.50 lakh crore. The cities are Odisha, Vishakapatnam in Andra Pradesh, Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu and Dahej in Gujrat. It will provide employment to over 37 lakh people, he said.
Likewise, the government is also interested to set up a PCPIR in Mangaluru for starting downstream petroleum-based industries as polymer, pharmaceutical and plastic. He said that a meeting would be held during the winter session of Parliament in New Delhi.
MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said the PCPIR could be set up on 2,000 acres of land acquired for Mangaluru Special Economic Zone.
Gas pipeline
Mr. Ananth Kumar also said that Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) pipeline would be laid from Kochi to Mangaluru in the next two and a half years. The Kerala government has agreed to part land for the pipeline. It would help Mangaluru Chemicals and Fertilizers in urea production, he added.
