Mangalore: Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has sent a proposal to the government of Karnataka to consider increasing the income limit of its civic workers belonging to Group-D (Poura Karmikas) to Rs. 3 lakh for eligibility of government benefits, said Mayor Mahabala Marla on Tuesday.
He was addressing a number of civic workers on ‘Civic workers day’ hosted by MCC here in Town Hall, Mangalore. Mayor said increasing the income limit is intended to enable more number of Group-D employees to access government schemes including educational scholarships to their children and employment facilities under 22.75 percent welfare scheme fund.
Mayor also thanked the civic workers for their efforts to keep the city clean.
400 posts lie vacant
In the 13 wards, a little more than 220 civic workers are employed to carry out their duties, while more than 400 posts are lying vacant.
Premanand Shetty, councilor asked the mayor to take this issue on priority and fill the vacant posts.
Former MLA Shashidhar Hegde said Chief Minister Siddaramaih has agreed to make temporary posts into permanent.
Pramila M.K, assistant commissioner assured support to the civic workers from the MCC. She said, “We tend to understand the importance of civic workers, without them. If they do not carry out the duty of keeping the city clean, we face the brunt,” she said.
Besides, two resource persons delivered separate talks on health and legal issues to the civic workers.
