MCC to begin source segregation of waste from March 15

Mangaluru: Hopeful of achieving 90 percent of door to door garbage collection coverage in the next two weeks, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) is planning to begin source segregation of waste from March 15.

City Corporation mayor Mahabala Marla told reporters here on Saturday that the amount of garbage littering has come down drastically and the new system is expected to bring it down to a bare minimum in the next two months. With the new system in place, the corporation has enough mechanism to collect segregated waste, which did not work in its favour during the last attempt, he said.

Requesting the co-operation of people, Hephsiba Rrani Korlapati, MCC Commissioner said that every Wednesday of the week will be particularly allotted to collection of dry waste and the remaining six days will be allotted to wet waste from March 15.

On a pilot basis, Mannagudda and Mangaladevi wards have been selected to carry out waste segregation system, before actually expanding the area of work in all the wards, she said and added that the collected waste is processed in order to send least amount of waste to the land fill.

The press note circulated during the meet said that the Antony Waste Handling Agency has been given 7 years term for solid waste management in the city. “The process of collecting SWM Cess along with property tax has been initiated and directed the waste generators to not to pay monthly user fee charges to the door to door collectors.

The note said that the agency has allotted 74 tippers and conventional vehicles and 35 compactors (10 tonne and 6 tonne), lorries including little over 300 man power for the task. It works on door to door collection and secondary transportation of solid waste management. In addition to it, ten more primary collection vehicles is expected to reach by March 10, the press note said.

Besides, a GPS system is being set up in all the primary and secondary transportation vehicles for online accessibility to track vehicle movement. As many as eight CCTV cameras are being deployed at the compost plant to monitor the weighbridge recording as well as unloading area near landfill.

“Closed lorry-tippers for collection of littering spots and street swept wastes will be deployed from March 1, by completely phasing out usage of open lorries. The city corporation will be making use of Swach Bharath logo in all its office correspondence letters from March 1”, the press note stated.

The commissioner mentioned that a series of programmes including a street play, painting competitions will be conducted in March to create awareness about the segregation of waste at the source.
