Mangaluru: The setting in of dusk on the weekend in coastal district brought sportive fortune to Karnataka with state becoming the lead scorer in 19th national-level Federation Cup. Beside Deepamale Devi’s gold medal in 20km walkathon, state grabbed three medals on Saturday.

However with the completion of second day the number of medals for Karnataka increased to five. The scoring was calculated on the basis of points scored by each state in concluded events. The state of Karnataka scored 63 points pushing Army to second (46) and Kerala to third (40).

The hot day saw eight finals, while performance of athletes was below par in comparison to their performances at same levels in other parts of the country. The reason, according to gold medalist Deepamale was scorching heat of coastal district burns more calories of athletes thus making them loose precious energy required to excel in the event. Agreeing to her argument her coach Dr Gandhi speaking to Newskarnataka.com expressed Deepamale today showed minute technical weakness which affected her performance. He opined facilities for athletes in India were poor though he did not go in detail.

Karnataka secured two bronze medals in 800m men’s race (Bharath K A) and in 100 m women’s race (M G Padmini) and one gold and a silver medal in 20km walkathon and 400m women’s hurdle (Arpitha M). The silver medalist Arpitha Manjunath said her performance was unsatisfactory though she was pursing 400m in Indian Camp. She opined she was doing better with her erstwhile coach as she was still to get adjusted with new coach.

On the other hand star performer Tintu Luka of Kerala schooled by P T Usha clinched gold medal finishing 800m in 2.04 minutes. Though she could not win over her past performance she was well ahead to Silver medalist Gomathi of Tamilnadu with 0.3 seconds.
