Mangaluru: The decision to ban the traditional buffalo race, Kambala, held annually in coastal Karnataka districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada has been stayed by the Karnataka High Court on Monday December 15.
Justice S. Abdul Nazeer, who originates from the region – Moodabidri – passed the interim order by staying the decisions of the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district administrations, which had denied permission for “Kambala”.
Thus once again this season, the Coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi will experience “Kambala”. However the court has imposed certain conditions.
According to the court’s order the organizers and the district administrations should ensure that buffaloes should not be subjected to unnecessary pain in violation of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
The Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District Kambala Committee had moved the High Court questioning denial of permission. The court adjourned further hearing on the case.
