Mangaluru: At least eight families were asked to vacate from the houses they were living for more than ten years at Bhavanti Street in the city on Thursday. The officials asked families to vacant, based on a court order.

According to reports, Suresh Bhat had approached the civil court claiming that the land – where over 30 families are staying as tenants – belonged to him. The court passed a verdict in 1999, which was in his favor. Subsequently, the aggrieved families too approached the court. After 15 years of wait, the court again passed a ruling on behalf of Mr. Bhat.

On Thursday, when the court officials came with an order along with the legal owners, the residents sought for more time. “We were not intimated about the court ruling. Give us some time. We have school going children. Their exams are approaching”, one of the residents told the officials. But, the officials asked the residents to obey the court order and move out.

Meanwhile, Human right activists asked some time with the officials until the residents are rehabilitated. However, Suresh Bhat refused to give more time. “We will follow the court order and lock the house”.
