The message has been in circulation since Sunday.

“I heard about it first on Sunday afternoon. By around 4.00 pm, we realised it was fake and people started circulating a counter message that it was a rumour, “said Dhruv Chand, a final year student at National Institute of Technology (Karnataka) (NITK).

Uday Kumar, senior professor in Electrical Engineering Department and Dean, Student Welfare said, “A student with the same name mentioned in the fake WhatsApp message died in the last week of July at KMC, Mangalore. Sreejith, who was a badminton player, died due to lung infection on July 21. Even the doctor who treated him confirmed this. Sadistic minds are tarnishing our image claiming that the first victim of Ebola is from NITK, ” he said.

Shubham Agarwal, Student Council President, NITK, wrote on the Facebook page NITKians, “There is a message circulating among students stating that one of our M-tech students has died due to the Ebola virus. I would like to assure each and everyone of you that this piece of information is totally WRONG and that the student had died due to issues with his platelet count which was actually a few weeks back. I condemn and am aghasted (sic) by this incident, which clearly shows how insensitive one can be, using a student’s death to create panic among everyone.” District Health officer (DHO) H S Shivakumar stated that no case of Ebola has been reported from Dakshina Kannada.
